Pregnancy Yoga FAQ

When can I start attending a pregnancy yoga class?

The second trimester (from approximately 14 weeks) is the best time to start a pregnancy yoga class. Once the placenta becomes fully functional, hormone levels balance out and your energy levels will probably be higher. However, some women prefer to wait until they are closer to the 20 week mark, when they have a noticable bump and "feel" more pregnant.

I've never done yoga before - would it be a good idea for me to start attending a class whilst pregnant?

Yes. Most women who attend a pregnancy yoga class are new to yoga, so you'll be in good company! The practices done in the class are specifically designed for pregnant women, regardless of whether or not they have done yoga before.

How will the class help me to prepare for the birth of my baby?

You will learn specific breathing techniques that you can use during the first stage of labour to help you deal with contractions, and techniques you can use during the second stage of labour to help the body with the process of opening up and giving birth to your baby. The class will also help you to prepare the body physically for the demands of labour, and you will learn different positions that you can use throughout labour. I don't advocate or promote any particular type of birth in the class, but what you learn will give you strength and confidence that can help you, whether you have a natural birth, an epidural, caesarean section, or any other kind of intervention.

What kind of breathing practices are taught?

A number of different breathing practices are taught during the class. You will learn breathing techniques that you can use during your pregnancy to stay calm and relaxed. You will also learn breathing techniques specifically for use during labour, eg how to breath during contractions and how to effectively use the breath to assist in giving birth to your baby.

I have an existing back condition - should I attend the class?

Yes. However, it is important that you inform me of your back condition, when you join the class, giving me as much detail as you can. Throughout the course I will advise you on practices that might aggravate your condition and practices which will help to ease it during your pregnancy.

Can I attend a pregnancy yoga class if I suffer from Pelvic Girdle Pain (also know as SPD - symphysis pubis disfunction)?

Yes, however, you should consult with your GP prior to attending the class. During the class you will be advised not to do certain poses (eg those which involve taking the knees wider than the hips or standing on one leg). You will be given alternative practices which are safe for you to do and which will not aggravate your condition.

Can I attend pregnancy yoga classes right up to the end of my pregnancy?

Yes. You can continue yoga into your third trimester, however the priorities will change as you become heavier and move closer to the birth. The aim of yoga at this stage is to keep you comfortable and prepare you for labour.

I can't afford the course fee. Is it possible to get a reduced rate?

Yes - I'm very flexible! If for any reason you are struggling financially let me know and we can work something out.

Do I need to bring anything to the class with me?

No. Mats, blankets, cushions, and anything else you might need during the class will be provided. Just wear something loose and comfortable.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further queries.
